LETTER TO THE MOON

Dear Moon,
You have watched me grow through windows, through tears, and through years.
You are a cherished part of my childhood memories.
Mom said, “You are my Mama,” which constitutes the love of two Moms, making you even closer to me.
You were there in every bedtime story, watching me while my Mom fed me in those moonlit evenings.
Mom said, “You bring more light if I eat all the morsels,”
and I felt sad when you didn’t appear, thinking I had left my plate unfinished.
You watched me counting the stars as a young girl, and at times, made me blush.
You witnessed all my dreams, the ones in which I imagined the appearance of my would-be, the one who would be my partner for life.
You added brightness and charm to my vivid dreams, making me appear more beautiful.
You were invited to my marriage too, holding me emotionally while I was broken, soothing me whenever I felt alone.
I turned to you for comfort and companionship.
You are my confidante, silently keeping the story I never told the world—the one even daylight could not bear to see.
You watched me every time I broke down, every time I fell.
You taught me how to shine without owning ourselves, how to manage without having more in life.
You have craters on you, yet you shine so brightly, giving me confidence to face hurdles in life.
Dear Moon, though miles away, you seem so close to me.
I look up whenever I miss my gone parents, as if they are hiding behind a star near you, refueling me to stand stronger than ever.
I don’t like it when people compare their loved ones to you, as no one can be so beautiful in times of peace and hardship, for you shine in all the phases you undergo.
You watched me grow, and I watched you grow, switching phases each day, teaching me how to rise every time I fail and grow stronger every time I get feeble.
Oh Moon, dear Moon, I know you belong to the whole universe,
but for me, you are my own personal Moon.
